Peru, a New Origin to Explore Together!

New Partnerships in Piura, Peru

This September, our team traveled to Piura, Peru, seeking new partnerships that represent our values of quality, equity, and sustainability. We’re excited to announce our first ever coffees from this region. Hillary from North America joined José López, our head of purchasing and producer relations in Huehuetenango, to build relationships in Piura. Read on to learn more about our visits in the region and the coffees we can’t wait to share with you!

Amacafé - Women’s Coffees with a Focus on Quality

Our guide to the region was Amacafé, a young but dynamic organization led by President Yuliana Gonzalez. Yuliana is a Q Grader and experienced cupper from a local coffee farming family, and the organization has flourished under her leadership. Amacafé is committed to promoting coffee quality and prosperity in the region, engaging both men- and women-led producer groups to bring their coffees to a new market.

Visiting Communities

We visited several cooperatives, beginning in Pumorco, Pacaipampa. Members welcomed us warmly with freshly made, puffy wheat tortillas before sharing their philosophy of chemical-free farming. After introducing Primavera to the group, we walked to a nearby farm to see the plants and a covered drying shed, similar to what we saw in Colombia.

A few more long drives through the Piuran Andes brought us to three additional meetings in the region. We presented to another group from the same Pumorco association (to reach producers in a different community), as well as a cooperative from Shuturumbe and another from Ullma. At every meeting, women were actively engaged in the conversation and many held leadership roles. In addition to gender equity, we were impressed with each community’s commitment to using organic farming practices.

Processing and Export

ur final stop back in Piura was the dry mill of Cooperativa Norandino. Equipped to handle both full container loads and microlots, the mill features density tables and electric color sorters to process coffees efficiently and thoroughly. After milling, the coffee’s journey to the port of Paita allows it to reach coffee consumers worldwide, connecting these Peruvian producers with a global market.

Through these visits, we saw firsthand the energy, innovation, and care of Piura’s coffee community—and we’re excited to grow these new partnerships and share their coffees with you.
